In an article published on 11th August, 2023, titled โFear, Grievance and Hate: How A Community Became Radicalisedโ by Dorset Eye, we embark on an ongoing series that delves into the darkness and still prevalent chapter of this online publicationโs history.
WHO IS LIZ BLADON?
Throughout this series, our primary objective is to furnish our readers with informative and empowering insights into the activities and endeavours undertaken by co-facilitators Deborah Anne Cridland and Jason Richard Cridland, behind Dorset Eye, thus enabling you to form your own opinions based on factual information.
Our primary objective is to debunk claims made by co-facilitators and publishers, Deborah Anne Cridland and Jason Richard Cridland, who have been accused of orchestrating divisive actions within the community. Join us as we navigate through the digital archives to shed a light on this web of fear-mongering, hatred, and misinformation.
In the opening segment of this series, we scrutinised the identity of Liz Bladon, the presumed author of the article. Unravelling this mystery has proven difficult, with multiple online accounts associated with the name and an absence from the electoral register. Contrary to claims made by โLiz,โ such as her removal from the โNo To The Barge” Facebook group, evidence suggests these assertions are unfounded. The piece also delved into the now non-existent campaign and associated Facebook group, now led by Kate Robson, along with the only named admin, Greg Anderson, raises further questions due to his connections with far-right actors and a notable shift from barge-related topics to an anti-immigration platform.
Dorset Eye has come under significant scrutiny for featuring content that appears to defend Jackie Walker, who was expelled from the Labour Party due to remarks about the Holocaust. The platform is also under examination for justifying rocket attacks by Hamas and disseminating disturbing statements like “I kill children, I love to see them die,” while invoking bizarre far-right conspiracy theories about the Jewish people. Concerns were initially raised by the Campaign Against Antisemitism in 2017, indicating potential racial bias within the publication. Recent reports suggest a resurgence of these problematic articles only a week ago, raising doubts about whether the publishers, Debbie and Jason, have adequately addressed the issue and are actively promoting racial hatred towards the Jewish community.
In addition to the concerning authorship, which alone raises a myriad of legal and ethical issues, we observed the exclusive use of screenshots without accompanying context or evidential links to the original posts and/or comments. The inclusion of profiles with eccentric names like Ladette M Squiggleton, Britishoscar JJ, and Holty Bfc introduces further complications that should attract scrutiny from you and Dorset Eye’s regulator, Impress. A significant concern arises from the failure to identify and credit the originator of any third-party content in this case. Professional journalists typically refrain from using social media posts without proper verification and approval from the source. This practice not only safeguards journalists from potential legal actions related to intimidation and harassment allegations but also prevents deceptive practices when adhered to correctly.
In exploring the theme of best practices in journalism, โLizโ frequently embarks on flights of fancy within their writing, addressing concerns about disconnected historical and thematic topics such as the Nazis of WWII, capitalism, and slavery. Their narrative also extends to criticising the majority “white” population of Dorset, echoing the style of the publicly unelected First Minister of Scotland, Humza Yousaf, who, in 2020, engaged in a notably racist tirade about the representation of “whites” in top roles in Scotland. This piece, in many respects, takes on the character of an opinion article without stating, yet it lacks the expected coherence that one anticipates from the opinion of a journalist. Instead, in my opinion it bears a resemblance to the perspective of a first-year university student newly introduced to “Das Kapital.”
Moreover, there are numerous unsubstantiated claims that lack support even from the poor-quality and often edited screenshots. For example, “Liz” alleges that a local 15-year-old girl recently faced racial slurs on Snapchat, and that a woman on the bus remarked, “I bet you’re from the barge.” Besides the use of an American racial slur without any evidence, it’s noteworthy that only men between the ages of 18 to 65 are permitted on the barge. Additionally, the author seems to conflate two separate Facebook groups, falsely asserting that the NTTB campaign has initiated recruitment to “replace those Councillors who they feel have not supported them.” In reality, this action is attributed to another group called “Portland Independent Councillors,” independently run by Stephen Cobb, as confirmed by former NTTB admin, Alex Bailey.
To conclude this segment of the series, the intricate task of unraveling the deceptive web of fear-mongering, hatred, and misinformation that has fuelled division within our community demands our ongoing commitment to addressing the near-religious fervour directed against Alex Bailey and his family, exposing many of the false statements made by “Liz Bladon.” Additionally, our exploration continues into the intersection of activism and harassment within the realm of journalism, fostering a crucial discussion on the ethical implications of such practices. Throughout this series, our primary objective remains to provide informative and empowering insights to scrutinise the roles of co-facilitators Debbie and Jason Cridland behind Dorset Eye, urging you to form your own opinions based on factual information. See you for part 3.
